As climate action is becoming a necessity all over the world, Sekem Development Foundation – SDF is the Egyptian partner participating in the 3-year Interreg NEXTMED project NBS4MED, Nature based solutions for climate resilient Mediterranean cities, which explores climate adaptation strategies and practical applications across Mediterranean countries.
The project integrates environmentally sustainable solutions in urban areas, where dense population and buildings require adaptive solutions; that strengthen climate resilience while improving livability.

About The Project
The project is cofunded by the European Union under the Interreg Next Med Programme, brings together 8 partners and 6 associated partners across 7 European & Mediterranean countries, to transform urban planning strategies through nature-based cost efficient climate adaptation solutions.
In Egypt, Sekem Development Foundation is collaborating with Heliopolis University for the implementation of the pilot action. Planned interventions include planting trees, expanding vegetation areas, and introducing cool pavement solutions to mitigate the heat effect in walkways and recreational areas; which will help address heat waves in the area.
The project aims to:
- Strengthen organisational capacities to design and implement fit-for-purpose nature-based solutions.
- Stimulate improvements in urban climate adaptation policies in project territories.
- Enhance transnational cooperation and exchange of knowledge.
