Together, the United Nations Convention on Combating Desertification (UNCCD) and the World Future Council (WFC) will cooperate in the fight against desertification and land degradation which is a key element in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. For this, Monique Barbut, Executive Secretary of the UNCCD has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Alexandra Wandel, Director of the WFC in Hamburg, Germany.
The World Future Council is a registered charitable organization which researches, identifies and spreads policy solutions that contribute to Sustainable Development. Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish, the SEKEM Founder, who received the Right Livelihood Award by the WFC in 2003 which is also known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize”, has been co-founder and one of the WFC councilors.
Every year, the WFC honors the most visionary policies for creating better living conditions with the Future Policy Award. Each year, the council chooses one policy topic on which progress is particularly urgent. This year, the council and the UNCCD will identify and award best practices that effectively combat desertification and land degradation. The winners will be recognized in a formal ceremony in September 2017 in Ordos, China.
For 40 years, SEKEM successfully fights desertification and land degradation and serves the community. In 2015, SEKEM was even awarded with the “Land for Life Award 2015” by UNCCD. SEKEM was selected due to its outstanding commitment to combating soil erosion and protecting soil fertility through sustainable agriculture in Egypt.
