In the light of the nexus between SEKEM and the European Union, Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development (HU) welcomed the Ambassador of Portugal in Egypt, Manuela Franco.
The first contact between the embassy and the university came up during a ceremony of the Slovenian embassy on the HU campus last August. During that event the International Office of Heliopolis University took the chance to invite the ambassador for an official visit to establish future collaboration between Portuguese institutes and the university in different exchange and mobility programs.
The visit of the Portuguese ambassador started at the SEKEM Farm where she was informed about the beginnings of SEKEM community, the vision, and the goals for sustainable development in Egypt. The tour also included a visit at the SEKEMs schools, the vocational training center, the medical center, the Ibrahim Abouleish Theatre and some of SEKEM’s companies.
Later the delegation headed to Heliopolis University where they were welcomed by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Yousry Hashem, the president of the university that was founded under the umbrella of SEKEM. There the ambassador was introduced to the university’s faculties, programs, staff, in addition to the mechanism working dynamic for the solar planes, wastewater treatment station and the botanical garden.
At the end of the tour, Manuela Franco said that she is looking forward to further exploring the technological field together in order to contribute to establishing an educational system that aims to achieve sustainable development goals.
