Recently, SEKEM community welcomed Sherif Habib, Governor of Beni Suef, who spent one day at the SEKEM Farm. The politician visited the facilities of SEKEM for determining the best practices and experience of SEKEM in the field of agribusiness and phytopharmaceutical manufacturing.
Both parties discussed possibilities for a cooperation in realizing the new government venture “The City of Medicine”. With this project, the Egyptian government plans to reclaim around 2200 Feddan (approx. 924 ha) desert land in Beni Suef governorate, located 120 km south of Cairo, for cultivating medicinal herbs and producing phytopharmaceuticals.
This promising venture is coming in the framework of realizing the Egypt Vision 2030 that heads at creating a diversified economy, based on innovation and knowledge. The Egyptian government is adopting this strategy since 2014 with the aim of realizing inclusive development and enhancing the life quality in Egypt.
As a pioneer in the field of sustainable development, SEKEM is striving since 1977 to spread the notion of ethical and sustainable business practices in Egypt and the world. This prospective project and SEKEM’s contribution as role model mark an important step for Egypt’s strategy of sustainable development.
