SEKEMSophia Symposium - The Miracle in The Desert
“I carry a vision deep within myself: in the midst of sand and desert, I see myself standing at a well drawing water. Carefully I plant trees, herbs and flowers and wet their roots with the precious drops. The cool well water attracts humans and animals to refresh and quicken themselves. Trees give shade, the land turns green, fragrant flowers bloom, insects, birds and butterflies show their devotion to Allah, the creator, as if they were reciting the first Sura of the Koran. The humans, perceiving the hidden praise of Allah, care for and see all that is created as a reflection of paradise on earth,” Ibrahim Abouleish (1937 – 2017).
How did the vision of the SEKEM founder Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish become reality? How is this social innovation working and how does it affect people’s lives? How can an efficient economy, a healthy social life and a living culture develop together? How can partnership between east and west build peace and prosperity?
To give you the opportunity to explore a sustainable community in the Egyptian desert, SEKEM offers a five-day hands-on experience, taking place at the SEKEM farm in Egypt. During this symposium, you will meet experts working in different fields in SEKEM to give you deep insights into the vision and how SEKEM’s holistic approach is implemented in its daily working and community life. Let’s Seed the Future… Let’s Harvest the Gold!
SEKEM invites you to the second phase of Let’s Seed the Future event, next Thursday April 18 on SEKEM’s main farm. We want to harvest the wheat we planted last November under the slogan 100% Organic, one of SEKEM’s main projects in the Vision for 2057.
Last November, SEKEM community got together to plant the seeds for Egypt’s Organic future. The invitation was extended to everyone who was interested and willing to point the way for a sustainable future. Next to students from SEKEM School, School for Children with Special Needs, the Vocational Training Center and Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development also SEKEM friends from all over the world came together to plant the seeds. Starting from November, pupils from local university and school regularly visited SEKEM in order to join the campaign.

Solutions for Scaling up Agroecology
Transitioning to sustainable food and agriculture systems is critical to tackle malnutrition,
social injustice, land degradation, water scarcity, climate change, loss of biodiversity, and
agroecology plays a key role therein. In 2018, the World Future Council awarded, in
partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and IFOAM – Organics
International, exemplary policies that scale up agroecology, and recognized, in collaboration
with the Startup TAGS, effective practices that empower small-scale food producers. Also a
number of award-winning experts promote scaling up agroecology. At this event we take a
closer look at World Champions advancing the much needed transformation of our food
systems and will discuss especially solutions from Africa. -

Social Initiative Forum: Unfolding Individual Potential for the Future
During the Social Initiative Forum (SIF), which will take place in December in SEKEM, we intend to share ideas, from all over the world, on how to shape a truly human education for the future. We welcome different people from different backgrounds to enter into a shared dialogue, to help shape an education that supports individual and holistic potential unfolding for a sustainable future. We recognize that this can only evolve through life-long learning with an integral approach, including formal school education, higher education, informal skills training initiatives, as well as entrepreneurial activities within economic, agricultural or cultural backgrounds. Let us inspire and encourage each other to think creatively and to risk starting brand new initiatives and impulses!
