According to SEKEM’s focus of the first half of 2023 on the Vision Goal #16, the topic will be “Social Transformation”.

The sustainable development of rural communities is a crucial issue and far-reaching goal for SEKEM. The SVG (SEKEM Vision Goal) #16 defines SEKEM's commitment and actions towards social change in Egypt, leading to people feeling responsible and empowered to shape the future of their country.
In 2004, SEKEM’s founder Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish initiated a community project to develop the 13 villages surrounding SEKEM farm. At that time, the project was in action for 3 years during which the 13 villages were supported with projects for their development.

The SEKEM Heliopolis University founded the Center for Rural Development as an academic institution to contribute to the achievement of the above mentioned goal with its expertise in the field of sustainable development. Together with the SEKEM group of companies they decided to reinitiate the project in October 2019 with students, teachers, professors and SEKEM staff, building on the previous experience and knowledge of the area. The development of the 13 villages is in line with the SEKEM Vision 2057 that integrates the four dimensions of sustainable development: ecology, economy, society, and culture.
The project covers an area of 45 kilometers square with around 35,000 residents in 13 villages and includes activities and training regarding the topics of waste management, health awareness, biodynamic agriculture, restoration and maintenance of buildings, construction of sanitation facilities, literacy courses and support for children with special needs. This project is not only an opportunity for the 13 villages to improve their living conditions and to create job opportunities but it is also an important step from academia to the field in order to achieve positive change and development in the community.
For the students it is a great chance to get involved in community work and to find ways to serve people and their country through their fields of studies.

In this webinar, the specialists from Heliopolis University Rural Development Centre, Mohammed Anwar and Gamel Hamed, will tell us about their activities and challenges within the 13 villages project.
